“And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed”

Missing the Truth

How Beauty is Making Scientists Rethink Evolution – The extravagant splendor of the animal kingdom can’t be explained by natural selection alone – so how did it come to be?”. This headline, from a New York Times article by Ferris Jabr, immediately grabbed my attention. I opened it and began scrolling through wondering if the New York Times would actually publish an article questioning the theory of evolution. As I read, it became apparent that Jabr identified a glaring problem in evolution, but the conclusion he proposes is far from the simple truth found in God’s word.

What was the problem facing evolution that Jabr identified? It is captured in a bird named the club-winged manakin about which he reports,

“it’s obvious from observation that the birds fly awkwardly — even the females. The self-perpetuating pressure to be beautiful, Prum argues, has impeded the survival of the entire species. Because the females do not court males, there can be no possible advantage to their warped bones and feathers.” (Jabr, 2019)

In other words, it is clear that the Club Winged Manakin did not evolve through natural selection alone. What else could there be? What other mode of change could bring about such strange attributes? The article tragically misses the simple truth concluding, “If there is a universal truth about beauty — some concise and elegant concept that encompasses every variety of charm and grace in existence — we do not yet understand enough about nature to articulate it.” The Bible reveals this truth simple and clearly “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” – Ecclesiastes 3:11. Evolution cannot explain the beauty in our world, because it is a reflection of the beauty of God displayed throughout creation.

When the Pharisees and Sadducees approached Jesus and asked for a sign, Jesus declared a cutting truth, “You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.” The Pharisees were among the wisest and most learned people of their day, but they were blinded to the simple truths of God.

Have you missed the simple truths of God amidst all of the information we have at our finger tips? Knowledge of the world is valuable, but it is nothing compared to knowing God and His word. Mark 8:36 ... “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
