“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”

2 Timothy 4:3–4

Wandering from the Truth

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

 

So begins the Declaration of Independence, one of the most influential documents in all of history. These words have guided the United States of America to throw off the shackles of slavery, establish women’s rights, and push back against the sin of racism. This statement is built upon two important ideas, truth and a creator.

 

Now, nearly 250 years later, there is a strong challenge against the idea of truth and an even stronger challenge against the idea that we have a creator. We now live in what is often called the postmodern era which is marked by uncertainty about truth. The polish philosopher Zygmunt Bauman said this, “It, [postmodernity], means the exhilarating freedom to pursue anything and the mind-boggling uncertainty as to what is worth pursuing and in the name of what one should pursue it.”[1]

 

Instead of seeking truth, people are now giving up on truth and seeking for what sounds best to them. This is the same attitude Paul was speaking against when he said, “having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth”. The world today is filled with more philosophies and ideas than ever before. Whatever we want to hear, we can find someone saying just that. As people let go of truth, they also let go of the idea that there is a loving creator who established what is true.

 

The truth is, we are created by God with a purpose and He establishes what is true and He had it recorded and compiled in the Bible. Let us seek to discover and understand God's truth in the Bible rather than figuring out what we believe is true.
